Several days, dates and overnight stays later, I waited for Toby to collect me. His continued mystery surrounding our dates still caused my skin to tingle with excitement. If it wasn’t dinner or a movie, it was a drive or live band. Every time was a total surprise.
What he had planned for me today was anyone’s guess but each time I saw him the thrill sent tingles to pink my cheeks. I still couldn’t quite believe I was living the fairy tale with my very own Eric. Thinking of him, reminded me of the night we shared two days ago.
We had spent the previous evening together, and when we woke the next morning, Toby asked me to come with him to visit his mother. Although it wasn’t under the best or normal circumstances, I couldn’t help but be excited over the prospect. He wanted me to meet his mother! This meant I was important to him. He wanted us to work, to be a couple. This made it official and I couldn’t be happier. I just wished it was under better circumstances for his sake. Tody would be apprehensive as to how his mother would be. It could be a good or bad day. I told him I would love to meet his mum. Just as I knew I now loved him. I had fallen unconditionally in love with him.
The home was a short drive from my house. He seemed as anxious as I did, and silence filled out journey. He would be hoping for a good day. I just wanted things to go well for his sake. We parked and his usual chivalry followed. He took my hand as we walked through the car park and into the building. The receptionist waved a hello to him before we went down a corridor and passed many rooms with doors open and closed. Tody stopped at an open door. I could almost feel the tension drain from his body. This must indicate a good day.
Without saying anything we stepped into the room, and a salt and pepper haired lady turned in a chair by the window.
“Hi, Mum. This is Maddie.” He said gesturing to me.
“It’s nice to meet you, Maddie.” She smiled, and I saw in her smile and eyes the son I’d come to love.
“You too.” I smiled in return.
“Let’s walk in the garden,” she said, standing, her eyes sparkling. It was hard to imagine that she had bad days, days she forgot, as she appeared to be delighted to see her son, and with me.
The three of us strolled through the beautiful, colourful grounds of the home. Toby and his mother exchanging and sharing the memories she had, and I could see the delight in his face. How heartbreaking it must be to be a stranger to her on other days. A few hours later, our visit complete, Toby drove to an Italian restaurant at the foreshore where we met up with his brother and sister. It seemed I was meeting the whole family today. This warmed me even more than I already was. I began to think that maybe Toby loved me back. Joy and love filled me to the brim.
His siblings were as charming as his mother and it seemed it was a family trait. Toby had charmed me from the first moment he got down on one knee. With the dinner over, Toby drove us to his apartment. Waiting for me there were candles placed all about his bedroom, which he lit after we walked in. On the bed, were yes, I couldn’t believe it either, rose petals. Toby was the epitome of romance. I pinched myself for the hundredth time since our meeting to ensure this was real.
His love making was slow and sensual, different to any other night we’d spent together. It was as though we both knew we loved each other without saying the words, showing it instead with our bodies. It was the best night of my life.
A knock on the door started me from my reverie. My Toby stood at my door holding a dozen red roses. Clichéd yes, romantic yes, but it doesn't matter as this is just him, sweet and romantic, he really is a prince. I wouldn't let negative thoughts ruin what we have. Sam's cynicism about Toby would not rub off on me. Yes he seemed too good to be true, but maybe that was just him. Maybe he was just different to other guys. She thought he was compensating for something. I didn't want to believe it no matter how much it niggled at me.
"Hey beautiful," he said handing me the flowers.
"Hey yourself. I'll put these in water."
Bringing them to my nose I inhale their sweet aroma and grin like a maniac. Being in love rocked.
